Sometimes I wonder why does life have to give us lemons? Why can’t it be melons or apples any other fruits?
Life doesn’t always hand over the lemons to you . Sometimes those extremely sour and bitter lemons are hurled at you and sometimes they are given as a free gift and you find them only when you take out the other groceries from the bag.
Then you just don’t know what to do . Even thinking about squeezing out the juice and sweetening it to mask the sourness and bitterness sucks.
I wish I could do what Cave Johnson would have done.
“If life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back. Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons. What the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give you lemons”
I can’t make life take back the lemons.
So I sit with the lemons. I allow myself to feel anger , frustration , sadness , righteous indignation and despair about the lemons which I ended up with.
The time I spend with lemons vary from hours to weeks. Finally I start thinking about what to do with the lemons. I may end up making a lemon tart or a lemon zest cake.
There are occasions when my rumination with the lemons went to months.
You don’t have to always change the lemon into something. Even though they have a better shelf life, they do shrink and shrivel. Then you just throw them out.
When it’s bad, you don’t have to be all heroic and turn the bad into something good.
If you’re ready, and you want to try a lemon recipe, go ahead and make it.
But if you feel lost and powerless and just want to allow the bad to ebb and flow out, then let it run its course.
Reach out and talk to people about the bad. Compare your lemons with theirs. You might realise that your lemons are better or you might hear about a wonderful recipe which worked with them.
Next time when life gives you lemons, you don’t have to make lemonade in a hurry. You can just choose to be with them instead.
